Guatemalan political party Semilla proclaims Thelma Aldana as presidential candidate and Jonathan Menkos as vice presidential candidate.
Semilla Movement announces that on March 3 it will officially proclaim the presidential candidacy of former Attorney General Thelma Aldana.
The Constitutional Court ruled that former Attorney General Thelma Aldana can not participate as a presidential candidate and leaves her out of the elections. Aldana was one of the favorites to succeed the current President Jimmy Morales.
The Supreme Electoral Tribunal accepts the nullity recourses against the candidacy of Thelma Aldana and temporarily leaves her out of the general elections. However, an appeal will be filed before the Supreme Court of Justice and ultimately, the Constitutional Court. All three top candidates face serious legal challenges that may prevent them from running.
The Supreme Electoral Tribunal dismisses six nullity proceedings against the presidential candidacy of Thelma Aldana. However, it accepts two processes and requests the Supreme Court of Justice, the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Comptroller General of Accounts to present a report on their legal situation. It was also reported that after resolving these processes this week, it will proceed to issue the credential that grants immunity to the candidate.
